The word Tantalus comes from the word 'Tantalise'  the story goes that in grand houses in the late Victorian/early Edwardian times, the Master of the house would lock away their Whisky and Gin in a Tantalus, there by tantalising the servants, also ensuring they couldn't take a quick nip from the decanter whilst the master was away!
